week of february 1st, 2010

If I were to go back in time and tell myself one of the concepts we learned this week, it would be characteristics of the moon:
Rilles- long valleys, channels from past lava channels that have since collapsed
Dark Spots- dust and basalt (igneaous)
Craters- spots on the moon that occur as a result of impact from asteroids/meteorites, they vary in size
Maria- dark areas on the moon that have lower altitude and are similar to ocean basins
Terra- lighter areas of the moon that are usually higher than the Maria
Rays- ejections/spray of moon debris as a result of a meteor impact
An experiment that would help us better understand the concept of these characteristics would be to 're-create' the moon. We could fill a bowl with flour, and this would represent the moon. To make craters and rays, we could use different sized marbles/ball bearings.
p.s. today is my birthday :)
